The “7,108th” island of the Philippines is the ingenious MTV Revelations Island on the online Second Life, a 3D virtual world where users can socialize, connect and create using voice and text chat. It allows players to explore some of the Philippine’s main attractions including the Chocolate Hills, Mount Mayon, and Boracay, a simulated microcosm of the Philippines that then Department of Tourism Secretary Mr. “Ace” Joseph Durano created as part of the 2009 “Awesome Philippines” tourism campaign in partnership with MTV Networks, to harness interactive websites and virtual realities in reaching out to its target market of 18- to 35-year-olds.
The first time a country has partnered with MTV Networks for tourism promotions, the campaign was launched in eleven markets, specifically Australia, Canada, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, the UK and the US.
