Philippine Flag

The symbolic colors are blue for peace, truth and justice; red for patriotism and valor; and white for hope, equality, and liberty.

The yellow sun at the center of the triangle stands for liberty. Its eight rays represent the eight provinces that took up arms against Spain – Manila, Laguna, Pampanga, Cavite, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Batangas, and Tarlac.

The stars at the corners of the triangle stand for the three main island groups of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

Lupang Hinirang

Tagalog version adopted in 1935

Music by Julian Felipe

Lyrics by Felipe Padilla de Leon

Beloved Country

English translation by Camilo Osias and A.L. Lane

1920s for the American Colonial Government

Land of the morning, child of the sun returning

With fervor burning, thee do our souls adore

Land dear and holy, cradle of noble heroes

Ne’er shall invaders trample thy sacred shores

Even within thy skies and through thy clouds

And o’er thy hills and sea

Do we behold the radiance, feel the throb of glorious liberty

Thy banner dear to all hearts, its sun and stars alight

Oh, never shall its shining field be dimmed by tyrants might

Beautiful land of love, oh land of light

In thine embrace ‘tis rapture to lie

But it is glory ever when thou art wronged

For us thy sons to suffer and die

Philippine Pledge of Allegiance

DepEd Order 54-2001 version

Iniibig ko ang Pilipinas,
aking lupang sinilangan,
tahanan ng aking lahi;
kinukupkop ako at tinutulungang
maging malakas, masipag at marangal.
Dahil mahal ko ang Pilipinas,
diringgin ko ang payo
ng aking magulang;
susundin ko ang tuntunin ng paaralan,
tutuparin ko ang tungkulin
ng isang mamamayang makabayan;
naglilingkod, nag-aaral at nagdarasal
nang buong katapatan.
laalay ko ang aking buhay,
pangarap, pagsisikap
sa bansang Pilipinas.

Original version

Iniibig ko ang Pilipinas
Ito ang aking lupang sinilangan
Ito ang tahanan ng aking lahi
Ako’y kanyang kinukupkop at tinutulungan
Upang maging malakas, maligaya at kapakipakinabang

Literal English translation of current version

I love the Philippines,
my land of birth,
home of my race.
I am protected by it and aided
To become strong, industrious and honorable.
Since I love the Philippines,
I shall heed the counsel of my parents,
I shall obey the rules of my school,
I shall fulfill the duties of a patriotic citizen,
Serving, studying, and praying with utter fidelity.
I offer my life, dreams, and striving
To the Philippine nation.

I love the Philippines.
It is the land of my birth;
It is the home of my people.
It protects me and helps me to be strong, happy and useful.
In return, I will heed the counsel of my parents;
I will obey the rules of my school;
I will perform the duties of a patriotic, law-abiding citizen;
I will serve my country unselfishly and faithfully
I will be a true Filipino in thought, in word, and in deed.
